Primorsky Krai, Russia--A female Far Eastern leopard, nicknamed Alyona, appears in good health, according to a recent field checkup shown in this undated photo from southwestern Primorsky Krai.
The leopard is perhaps the world's most endangered subspecies of big cat, the Wildlife Conservation Society noted. An estimated 25 to 40 individuals inhabit a narrow strip of land along the Russian-Chinese border.
Scientists are concerned inbreeding may be causing heart murmurs and other genetic defects in the population.

Ramat Gan, Israel, October 27, 2008--A veterinarian cares for a wounded, two-day-old lioness cub at the Zoological Center of Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan, a recreated African savannah.
The cub was rejected by her mother, Sarah, who is the mother of three. Zoo officials hope the cub will rejoin the pride of six males and six females.
African lions are vulnerable to extinction, according to the IUCN. The primary threat is indiscriminate killing to protect life and property.
